Oahu's North Shore Has It All

Author: Caitlin Moore

It is likely that you've heard great things about Hawaii, but the fact that there is so much to see and do can make planning your visit an intimidating prospect. For a taste of the best that the aloha state has to offer, check out Oahu. And, if you want to narrow your field of vision even more, focus on the North Shore for a top-notch Hawaiian experience.

You might not be aware of it, but you've probably seen pictures of Oahu's North Shore on a few occasions. Due to the monstrous waves that make their presence known throughout the winter months, this is where a number of surfing competitions are held each year. Even experienced sportspeople have to exercise caution in these conditions, but a talented few are able to impress the rest of us with their skill and grace as they skim the daunting white caps.

Sunset Beach boasts the longest stretch of ride-worthy surf spots in the world, so stop by if you think you have what it takes to hold your own alongside the pros. If surfing isn't your cup of tea, there's no shame in playing the role of a spectator, and if you visit during the summer, the waves will be flat enough to swim, snorkel, and enjoy a leisurely float.

To get a feel for what the rest of Hawaii is like in its natural state, a visit to the Waimea Valley Audubon Center is in order. Gentle hikes will lead you through the habitats of a number of exotic birds, plants, and animals. Waini Falls would be a great place to stop for a picnic, and the cool streams will provide wonderful photo opportunities. The eclectic wildlife and untouched environmental conditions have made this a valuable research site for local scientists, so be sure to respect the delicate surroundings during your visit.

Another attraction not to be missed is the Polynesian Cultural Center. A number of Hawaiian and South Pacific traditions are illustrated for the interested crowds that flock here, including an authentic luau, a canoe pageant, and lots of music. Hawaii's largest night show is also performed here, so if you have any interest in learning a bit of history while you eat, drink, and dance, add this event to your list of things to do while visiting the North Shore.

A few miles inland you'll find the Dole Plantation, where rows of bananas, taro, papaya, mango, and coffee can be seen growing before they are shipped to the rest of the world. If you'd prefer to head offshore, you can charter a boat for some serious deep sea fishing or even a shark cage tour. By escaping the crowds, it is more likely that you'll have the opportunity to snare a massive blue marlin, and no where else in Hawaii are you able to see sharks face to face in such safe conditions.

The density of activities in this one small portion of Hawaii makes it a good idea to find a place to stay somewhere amidst all these amusements. A number of exciting options exist in the form of vacation rentals, which allow for you and your traveling companions to enjoy a number of amenities while you truly remain away from it all. Reserving your own private villa will remove you from the ebb and flow of hotel crowds, and the only tide you'll have to think about will be the one a few steps out the door. Experiencing this little corner of paradise from the vantage point of a private vacation rental will be like easing into the warm, salty ocean on a picture-perfect day. Your worries will become nonexistent knowing that you are choosing convenience, tranquility, and most likely a great bargain. Look online for the biggest variety of North Shore Vacation Rentals, and be sure to find one with all the special features you deserve.
