Unforgettable Announcement that Shook the World

Author: Daniel Hunt

These events took place long before the Cold War was over. We should revise some of the controversial moments. Being an educated society we need to realize the consequences of interaction of politics and sports on the international stage. The year 1984 was famous for the boycott the Soviet Union and other socialist countries decided to arrange. The Olympic Games held in LA were ignored by the countries of Eastern Europe for several reasons. The Olympic Committee received the statement two weeks before the official opening. One of the fears of the Committee was that other East European countries would do the same and when the opening was over their suspicions came true. The only one to participate from the East of Europe was Romania. To everybodys surprise Cuba also joined the boycott supporting Soviet Union.

Delegation members enlisted commercialization and poor security conditions as the reasons of boycott. After the statement was promulgated the analysts saw another reason in the boycott. They considered the maneuvers of Soviet Union a response to the US that boycotted the Olympic Games in Moscow, protesting against the invasion of Russian troops in Afghanistan. I remember I only learned how to write a good article and I was analyzing the situation around this famous sporting event. It was obvious that only a few people believed that the boycott was arranged due to the reasons enumerated by the Soviet Delegation. The White House announced their positions towards the situation calling a boycott a political act. Many officials stated that security level was high enough for everybody to feel secure. Over 140 athletes competed at the Olympic Games but the level of quality could be higher. The countries from Eastern Europe were mostly the gold medal holders of the last Olympic Games where representatives of every country participated.

Despite the great success of the Games that became profitable without financial support of the government, the boycott made us think over the roles that politics and sports play in our lives. And interesting fact is that these Olympic Games were not the first case of politicization of an International Event. Even after the Cold war politics and sport go hand in hand even today. Pekings desire to stage the Olympic Games was disinclined for somewhat political reasons. When Beijing was announced the Olympic Games holder, opinions concerning this fact also split up. Some communities and parties saw political motivation in this decision. The conflict will never be exhausted as long as controversial political currents get involved in the International sporting affairs.
