Slow but Steady Action

Author: Lynda Collins

Las Vegas sports stores reported decent two-way action on Round 3 NCAA Tournament games, though wagering had slowed down since the first two rounds were completed on Sunday.

"It (money) will start rolling in again Thursday night," Stratosphere Tower bet shop supervisor Eric Solomon said.

Sin City crowds for the Sweet Sixteen, Elite Eight and Final Four don't approach the throngs that congregate for the tourney's opening four days, highlighted by 48 games in less than 96 hours.

"The weekend was great, but things have quieted down," Eric Viggio, a Stardust supervisor, said.

Going into the first day's games last week, wise guys jumped on underdogs early and squares on favorites late.

It's a little different story this week.

"Action is pretty two-sided," Viggio continued.

"Gonzaga has been getting some money and UCLA has gone from a 4-point favorite to a 3 point choice.

"I think the number will stay there."

The Zags and Bruins play in the Oakland Regional Thursday night.

"We're at 3 and a lot of people have been betting Gonzaga on the money line," the Stratosphere's Solomon added.

"They're also taking George Mason over Wichita State.

"The game opened a pick'em and went to George Mason minus 2.

"Personally, I prefer Wichita State."

So does Jeff Sherman, a Hilton SuperBook oddsmaker.

"The bettors like George Mason, but I lean to Wichita State," Sherman declared.

The two "Cinderfellas" meet Friday in Washington.

Sherman noted the NCAA Women's Tournament was drawing a share of wagering, thanks largely to increased TV coverage.

"I think more books are putting women's sides and totals up," Sherman said.

"It's more variety for the players."
